Me with my Mum

Happy New Year to you all and may you all be blessed with love and peace at this time and may all your wishes and dreams come true in 2010. Thank you to you all for reading my newsletters for coming to my events and my coaching and for joining in with what I am doing. I am sending you a meditation of unconditional mother love, mothering yourself and connecting with your heart’s desire and to tell you about my mother and my journey with her.

In Britain this is a time of new beginnings as the days start to become longer again after the 21st December and we look towards a new year. I am hoping to inspire you to love yourself and treat yourself well perhaps thinking of yourself like a newborn baby and imagining the love and care that you would need to give yourself. I am putting on some special events for Valentines again which I hope you can come to.

Mother Love

I am writing today about Mother love and loving your mother and, of course, mothering yourself. This is to bring a sense of self love and acceptance whether you are closely connected to your mother or not and to bring that sense of mothering and unconditional love into your life. Personally I have received lots of mothering from my lovely mother, from my mother's mother Gu, my Stepmother Linda, my Great Aunt Eve, my neighbour Countess Esther Benckendorff, Anne Lewis in Manchester and the many lovely therapists and women that I have known. I find Rosen Body Work therapy training particularly healing in terms of mother love as it is about touch and presence and unconditional love.

Whenever I have needed mothering it has come in many different forms from many different people but it has come into my life and for me it is important. I know some people may not get on with or see their mothers for very valid reasons but even if this is the case you can still access mother love or unconditional love in your life if you wish to. For when you value yourself you feel valuable and this affects how you are in the world and what you are able to create. So I would welcome you to think of ways to give yourself unconditional love or mother love and if you haven’t got a mother who is available to you could imagining being loved unconditionally and see how that feels and see if there are people you could receive mother love from. I have had times in my life when I was not very connected to my mother and times when I lived for many years away from her when I lived in the North West of England and I found very loving support from other women which helped me a lot.

My Mother

I have the most amazing and inspiring mother and it is directly because of her that I am engaged in my present projects. She has encouraged and believed in me all the way and is proud of what I do. When I grew up she was a very busy woman with three children, work and a husband working abroad. She ran a courier service for fashion photographers such as David Bailey and Jim Lee in the 70’s, then wrote big romantic novels, film scripts and a book of interviews with Pattie Boyd on '60s rock wives in the 80’s. In the 90’s she realised her passion and trained to become a psychotherapist.

Me with my Mum

Because of our journeys we have grown together and learned how to communicate and understand each other. She is a dear friend and a soul mate and I feel lucky to be around her. We have a lot in common sharing a love of self development, books and courses and are currently both trying to improve our vision with Peter Grunwald of www.eyebody.com. It is amazing to have a mother who understands and "gets" me and I feel it has helped me go out in the world and do what I do. She backs me 100 per cent and this support allows me to follow my truth.

Difficulties with my Mum

I know that it is not always easy for people dealing with their mothers. In fact it was not always easy for me and my mother and we had great difficulties when I was younger and I could not understand why we argued so much. I wanted a cosy mother to spend time with and was angry and upset that this did not seem to be the case. Interestingly as I have become calmer and more available to myself I experience her as calmer, cosier and more present and I have the mother I have always wanted. We have persevered in understanding one another and at each stage chosen, out of love, to meet each other facilitating and negotiating whatever blocks come up. I do realise that I am very lucky because my mother is a psychotherapist and I am a Life Coach and we have a language of emotional communication which means we can address things that come up between us.

Focussing on service and creativity

My mother has taught me great lessons. She has pointed out that we are all individuals and equally important no matter who we are, however humble or powerful, we are just souls on a journey. She worked for lots of different charities including Amnesty International fundraising and writing letters as well as driving the van for a homeless charity at night where we gave out soup and sandwiches in the centre of London. She also loved to party and our home was always full of people who were interesting, dynamic and creative.

I am very lucky with my Mum and she is the inspiration for me to grow and develop. She is bright, intelligent, funny and humble and I love her dearly.
